Fear. It’s the silent enemy that keeps so many of us from obeying one of Jesus’ clearest commands: to go and make disciples. If you’ve ever felt your heart race or your mouth dry up at the thought of sharing the gospel, you’re not alone. The fear of rejection, inadequacy, or just plain awkwardness is enough to paralyze even the most well-intentioned believer. But here’s the truth: fear is not from God.
Paul reminds us in 2 Timothy 1:7, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but one of power, love, and sound judgment.” That fear you feel? It’s not from Him. And if it’s not from Him, it has no place in the life of someone who’s been redeemed by the blood of Christ.
But how do we move past it? How do we silence the inner voice that whispers, “What if they laugh at me? What if I don’t have the right words? What if I fail?” Let’s look at five practical ways to overcome fear and boldly share the good news of Jesus Christ.
1. Remember Who Sends You
You’re not going out on your own authority. The King of the universe, the One who created the person you’re afraid to talk to, has sent you. Jesus said in John 20:21b, “As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” The power of the Holy Spirit is with you, and He promises to never leave or forsake you. If God is for you, what do you really have to fear?
2. Shift Your Perspective
Too often, we focus on ourselves when we’re afraid. What will they think of me? What if I mess up? But the gospel isn’t about us—it’s about Jesus. Instead of worrying about your performance, think about their eternal destiny. Imagine standing in heaven one day and seeing someone there because you overcame your fear and shared the truth with them. Eternity is worth a little discomfort, isn’t it?
3. Be Prepared
One of the biggest fears people have about evangelism is not knowing what to say. What if they ask a question you can’t answer? What if you stumble over your words? Here’s the good news: you don’t have to have all the answers. What you do need is a clear understanding of the gospel.
Take time to practice explaining the good news in simple terms. A great framework is the Three Circles method or Romans Road. Another great tool is the two Evangelism Explosion questions…
- If you were to die tonight, where do you think you would end up?
- If you stood before Jesus and He were to ask you why He should let you into Heaven, what would you say?
You don’t need a theology degree—just a heart full of love and a basic understanding of what Christ has done for you.
4. Start Small
You don’t have to stand on a street corner with a megaphone or speak to a large group to share the gospel. Start with people you already know—your coworkers, neighbors, or family members. Pray for opportunities to naturally bring up spiritual conversations. Sometimes, sharing the gospel starts with something as simple as asking, “Can I pray for you about anything?” and letting the conversation flow from there.
5. Rely on God, Not Yourself
Fear often stems from relying on our own strength instead of God’s. The truth is, you can’t save anyone—only God can. Your job is to be faithful in sharing the message; the results are up to Him. Trust in the Holy Spirit to guide your words and work in the heart of the person you’re speaking to.
One of my favorite reminders is Isaiah 55:11, where God says, “My word… will not return to Me empty, but will accomplish what I desire.” When you share His truth, you’re planting seeds that He will use in His time and His way.
Fear vs. Faith
The choice to share the gospel is ultimately a choice between fear and faith. Will you let fear dictate your actions, or will you trust God to do what He has promised?
Here’s what I’ve learned: the more you step out in faith, the more God will grow your confidence. Start small, but start. Push through the fear, knowing that the God who saved you is with you every step of the way.
Because at the end of the day, sharing the gospel isn’t just a command—it’s a privilege. We get to be part of God’s redemptive plan for the world. And when you look back on your life, I promise you won’t regret the times you overcame fear to make Jesus known. You’ll only wish you had done it more.
So, who’s your one? Who is God calling you to share the gospel with this week? Pray for boldness, step out in faith, and trust Him with the rest. Because fear has no place in the life of someone who’s been saved by grace.
Go, and tell. Eternity is worth it.
